Lean Six Sigma

A process improvement program that combines both Lean and Six Sigma.

During the early 2000s with the work of Michael George, Lean Six Sigma morphed from Six Sigma and became its own unique process. Typically, it involved adding ideas and concepts from Lean into Six Sigma. Less often is Six Sigma added into existing Lean programs.

Other companies adopted similar terms like “Lean Sigma” or “Sigma Lean” or “Lean and Six Sigma.” There is also confusion about the combined terms, with incorrect phrases like “Lean Six” being used by new practitioners.
